Mitsugon-ji was founded in the first year of the K\u014dnin era (810), during the reign of Emperor Saga, the 52nd emperor of Japan, by K\u014db\u014d Daishi. According to tradition, within the Awa\u2013Sanuki border region, three temples\u2014Ch\u016bren-ji and Mitsugon-ji among them\u2014were each miraculously erected in a single night, embodying the principles of oneness of essence, form, and self.<\/span><\/p>\n

The principal image of the temple is Sh\u014d Kannon Bosatsu, and the accompanying image of Fud\u014d My\u014d\u014d is revered as a carving made by K\u014db\u014d Daishi himself, said to have been engraved with his fingernails.<\/span><\/p>\n

Mitsugon-ji was also renowned as the prayer temple of the \u014cnishi clan, lords of Shiraji and \u014cnishi Castle. The temple\u2019s Daihannya Sutra was donated by \u014cnishi Kakuy\u014d, the castle lord.<\/span><\/p>\n

However, due to warfare brought about by the armies of Ch\u014dsokabe, the Main Hall, abbot\u2019s quarters, treasure hall, and other buildings were completely destroyed by fire. Thereafter, Gon-Dais\u014dzu Shinkai Sh\u014dnin vowed to restore the temple and successfully rebuilt it. Since that time, the flame of the Dharma has been continuously preserved, and prayers have been offered for the peace and well-being of all realms and beings, a tradition that continues to this day.<\/span><\/p>\n
