In earlier times, there existed four temples in this area:<\/span>
\nOkano-b\u014d; Nyoh\u014d-ji (founded before the Tensh\u014d era, with Eleven-Headed Kannon as its principal image); Sh\u014dgon-ji (enshrining Avalokite\u015bvara \/ Kannon Bosatsu); and Any\u014d-ji (founded by K\u016bkai during the Enryaku era, with Yakushi Nyorai as its principal image).<\/span><\/p>\n

During the Tensh\u014d era, these temples fell into ruin after being destroyed by warfare caused by the invasion of Ch\u014dsokabe Motochika. Their principal images were subsequently enshrined together at the site of Okano-b\u014d (present-day Shimodera-yashiki), where Ch\u014draku-ji was established.<\/span><\/p>\n

Later, in an effort to enhance the dignity and standing of the temple, Yuson Sh\u014dnin, regarded as its restorer, rebuilt Ch\u014draku-ji at its current, higher location in the first year of the Keian era (1648).<\/span><\/p>\n

Among the temple\u2019s treasured holdings are the \u201cYo-Ryu Kannon Painting on Silk,\u201d designated as an Important Cultural Property of Japan, and the \u201cMandala Depicting the Life of K\u014db\u014d Daishi,\u201d designated as a Cultural Property of Tokushima Prefecture.<\/span><\/p>\n
